Wildlife

What actually lives in Sariska.

Sariska is tiger and leopard habitat, but the reserve supports a much wider range of species — deer, smaller predators, and a long list of resident and migratory birds. We describe what's genuinely present and what a safari can realistically show you, not a highlight reel. Ajay's own particular interests are tigers, leopards, hyenas, jackals, birds and reptiles, and the smaller signs of forest life, from animal tracks to birdsong.

A note before the species list.

No wild safari anywhere guarantees a sighting, and Sariska is no exception. Tigers and leopards live in the reserve, but a given visit may or may not include a sighting. We plan around the right season and timing and set realistic expectations upfront — that's what we can actually control. What you see on the day is down to the animals, not us.

Mammals

Tiger, leopard and what shares the forest with them.

Bengal Tiger

Tigers were reported absent from Sariska in the mid-2000s and were reintroduced from 2008. A sighting is possible, never guaranteed.

Leopard

Elusive and hard to track — a leopard sighting is, if anything, less predictable than a tiger one.

Striped Hyena & Jackal

Present but rarely the focus of a typical safari — both are more nocturnal than the reserve's daytime safari hours generally allow for reliable viewing.

Sambar & Spotted Deer

Sambar and spotted deer (chital) are among the deer species recorded in the reserve.

Nilgai & Wild Boar

Nilgai (the largest Asian antelope) and wild boar are among the mammals recorded in the reserve.

Langur

Northern plains grey langur are among the primates recorded in the reserve.

Birdlife

A genuinely strong reserve for birding.

Sariska's mix of forest, grassland and seasonal water supports both resident species and winter migratory visitors. It rewards a slower, dedicated morning rather than being squeezed into a tiger-focused drive. Our Birding page shows a selection of species recorded in the reserve, drawn from published research.
